Originally a nineteenth century iron and coal freight water-climbing waterway connecting the Delaware and Hudson Rivers, the Morris Canal ceased operation in 1924 due to railroad competition. It’s now being revived as a Greenway trail that takes the trail user on a historic adventure through the old iron mining and manufacturing industry of North Jersey.
During this trail chat, Rich Rockwell, the leading expert on the Morris Canal in Bloomfield, will take you on a virtual adventure with maps and photos. You will learn about the history of the canal and its path across the state and you will explore various hiking options you have to look forward to once the quarantine has lifted-- ranging from casual scenic walks and links to NYNJTC Trails to industrial archeological explorations.

Rich Rockwell
Rich Rockwell has been a Councilman in Bloomfield for two years and was recently elected to a three-year term. Since retiring last year from a career in web technology with the pharmaceutical and banking industries, he’s spent more time hiking and volunteering with the Trail Conference and South Mountain Conservancy.
Rich has served on the Board of the Historical Society of Bloomfield for many years. As their webmaster and archivist of digital historic photographs, he’s published a book, Bloomfield Through Time.
Rich is also on the board of the Bloomfield Morris Canal Greenway Committee and Bloomfield Historic Preservation Commission and has been instrumental in preserving the Historic Collins House, one of the last remaining structure in Essex County that was on the Morris Canal.
He has a passion for artifacts from industry and transportation such as abandoned mines, railroads, canals, interurban lines and amusement parks and created several websites on related topics including digitizing and enhancing historic photographs from glass plate negatives and lantern slides.
