During a recent weeding day, we noticed among the Japanese stiltgrass, quite a bit of invasive small carpetgrass in our native gardens at the Trail Conference headquarters. And, it was in flower! So after taking a few photos, we deployed the weed-whacker on it. Small carpetgrass is an ISF Blockbuster target species. Its an annual grass that looks similar to both Japanese stiltgrass and our native deertongue grass. So far there are only two confirmed locations in the Lower Hudson valley. Left photo: closeup of small carpetgrass - note the hairs on the edges of the leaf blade. Right photo: comparison of our native deertongue grass (left), small carpetgrass (middle), and Japanese stiltgrass (right).
