The village of Sloatsburg in New York is home to Dater Mountain Nature County Park and is located at the southern entrace of Harriman State Park, the largest state park in New York. Harriman State Park encompasses nearly 48,000 acres of vast forest with hundreds of miles of hiking trails, including sections of the Appalachian Trail and the Long Path. The central location of Sloatsburg allows easy access to a number of the surrounding trails via public transit, whether you are looking for a short walk through the woods or a longer day hike to explore what the local parks have to offer. Below are a list of hikes in Sloatsburg that are easily accessible via public transit and a short walk from the train station.

Harriman State Park

  • Racoon Brook Hills Trail/Pine Meadow Lake/Diamond Mountain Loop: This loop hike at the southern end of the park climbs Raccoon Brook Hill and Diamond Mountain, with several panoramic viewpoints, and runs along  cascading Stony Brook and scenic Pine Meadow Lake. From the Sloatsburg Train Station this hike can be accessed by following Seven Lakes Drive to the Pine Meadow Trailhead on the righthand side of the road. Take the Pine Meadow Trail to the Reeves Meadow Visitor Center where you can follow the linked hike description.
  • Ramapo Torne/Raccoon Brook Hills Trail Loop from Reeves Meadow: This strenuous loop hike features expansive views over Torne Valley and Hillburn, with the New York State Thruway visible below. From the Sloatsburg Train Station this hike can be accessed by following Seven Lakes Drive to the Pine Meadow Trailhead on the righthand side of the road. Take the Pine Meadow Trail to the Reeves Meadow Visitor Center where you can follow the linked hike description.
  • Diamond Mountain/Stony Brook Loop: This loop hike at the southern end of the park follows several picturesque streams and climbs to a viewpoint over Lake Sebago. From the Sloatsburg Train Station this hike can be accessed by following Seven Lakes Drive to the Pint Meadow Trailhead on the righthand side of the road. Take the Pine Meadow Trail to the Reeves Meadow Visitor Center where you can follow the linked hike description.
  • Seven Hills/HTS/Reeves Brook Trail Loop to Ramapo Torne Loop: This loop hike at the southern end of the park leads to an expansive viewpoint from the summit of the Ramapo Torne. From the Sloatsburg Train Station this hike can be accessed by following Seven Lakes Drive to the Pint Meadow Trailhead on the righthand side of the road. Take the Pine Meadow Trail to the Reeves Meadow Visitor Center where you can follow the linked hike description.

Dater Mountain Nature County Park

  • Dater Mountain and Harriman State Park Loop: This loop hike climbs to several viewpoints in Dater Mountain Nature Park, passes the remains of an old farm, and runs along cascading Stony Brook. From the Sloatsburg Train Station this hike can be accessed by following Seven Lakes Drive to Johnsontown Road. From the trailhead on Johnsontown Road you can follow the linked hike description.
